Learn About the Value of an Annual Eye Exam

Why get an eye exam?

Your vision is priceless. It's quite possibly the most important sense you have. That's why having a comprehensive eye examination with an eye care professional is so important.

By having your eyes examined every year, you'll take responsibility for maintaining your best vision possible.

Your annual eye exam can detect several eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts, at an early stage of progression to allow treatment before they have time to turn into something serious.

An eye exam can even alert doctors to general health problems like diabetes, cancer, and high blood pressure.

Eye exams from board-certified professionals like those at Midwest Family Eye Center are essential for better vision and improved overall health. Call us today to schedule an appointment for your next eye exam!

What an Eye Exam Is Like

Having your eyes examined is an easy, comfortable, and pain-free experience.

The eye is the only human organ that can be thoroughly examined on the inside without any type of complicated or uncomfortable invasive treatment.

New state-of-the-art technologies allow doctors a clear look inside, to quickly assess the eye's condition and discover the presence of any problems.

Before your eye exam, your eye care professional will explain exactly what each step includes and what will be looked for.

Using a mix of both highly sophisticated and very simple test equipment, your eyesore professional will perform some or all of the following procedures to check for various conditions:

  • Refraction - The doctor tests the refractive power of your eyes, or the ability of your eyes to change focus from near to far. This test determines your visual prescription, to address issues like nearsightedness or farsightedness.
  • Retinal Pictures - Technology now allows doctors to digitally map your eye and look for abnormalities. These pictures can show conditions like swelling in the eye's capillaries or other factors that can provide early indicators of more serious conditions, such as glaucoma.
  • Field of Vision Test - Your field of vision is the entire area seen when your gaze is fixed in one direction. This test is used to check for gaps in your peripheral (side) vision.
  • Snellen Chart - The well-known "eye chart" provides a rudimentary visual acuity test that measures how well you see at various distances.

If you're like most people, you'll actually find the eye exam process to be as fascinating as it is painless. Best of all, you'll be on your way to the healthiest vision possible!

What's New in Vision

When it comes to eyeglasses, it's no longer your grandfather's old spectacles! New materials and advanced technology have created eyewear that is lighter, safer, and better in every way imaginable.

Options include:

  • Progressive, no-line lenses like Varilux® to provide clear vision near and far
  • No-Glare protection like Crizal® lens technology provides a safer anti-glare vision for a variety of lighting conditions, such as driving at night.
  • Featherweight lens material that makes glasses easier and more comfortable to wear, no matter what your prescription.
  • Anti-scratch coatings that protect against smudges, fingerprints, dirt, and water
  • Impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses, such as Airwear®, protect young and adult eyes alike, both at work and at play
  • Photochromic lenses such as Transitions®, and polarized lenses offer UV protection to guard your eyes against harmful sun exposure and the blinding effect of the sun's rays

Combine these many exciting lens technologies with the tremendous variety of fashionable new frames available today, and you'll find that glasses are no longer just a necessity–they are a complement to your personal style!

Who Should Have an Eye Exam?

For adults, it's the key to maintaining great vision, eye health, and overall health as well. It can not only identify refractive errors but also detect the early warning signs of diabetes and hypertension, reducing the risk of stroke, heart attack, and more.

For children, an eye exam can be even more important, because 80% of everything a child learns by age 12 is acquired visually. Vision disorders are the fourth most common disability among U.S. children.

Eye exams just make good sense–for everyone!

Success Stories

"My youngest son was having trouble in school. He'd always made good grades but had never been able to pass a standardized test. He was also having behavioral problems. One day I took him for an eye exam.

We discovered he had a vision problem that could be easily corrected with glasses. Since getting his new glasses, he passed a standardized test with flying colors, and his behavior issues have improved, too.

We were so pleased and excited by these results that we scheduled eye exams for everyone in our family.

It's really true—eye exams and the right lenses can make a huge difference!"
